Elliott: Canada Day means our 23rd annual all-Canuck lineup

Former Ontario Blue Jays and Mississauga North Tigers — the Naylor brothers — will start in our 23rd annual Canada Day team. That’s Bo Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.), left and older brother Josh Naylor at a Baseball Canada banquet.

And a “Happy Canada Day” to you, too.

Our mythical Canada Day lineup began in 2001 long before the World Baseball Classic team was created by former commissioner Bud Selig to expand the industry around the globe.

Like every other pretend teams of all Canucks or WBC-eligible Canucks, we take our best. A total of 17 Canadians have appeared in the majors this season and two who are WBC eligible.

Canuck HOFers Fergie Jenkins (Chatham, Ont.), left, and Larry Walker (Maple Ridge, BC). Photo: Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame

National treasure Fergie Jenkins (Chatham, Ont.) and Larry Walker (Maple Ridge, BC) had zero trouble recruiting pitchers and easing pitch-count restrictions teams insist upon during international competition.

The Cooperstown inductees, along with Pat Gillick, part owner of the Philadelphia Phillies and former Blue Jays Hall of Fame general manager and a Canadian citizen, helped out as well -- as he did going back to Canada’s 1999 Pan Am team in Winnipeg ... where Stubby Clapp (Windsor, Ont.) hit a rocket to left. Or maybe it was a bloop.

Besides those three: GM Alex Anthopoulos (Montreal, Que.) of the Atlanta Braves; GM Farhan Zaidi (Sudbury, Ont.), of the San Francisco Giants and Paul Beeston (Welland, Ont.), former Jays president, helped pry players away from GMs and farm directors. Also working behind the scenes were Jays assistant GM Andrew Tinnish (Ottawa, Ont.), former GMs Doug Melvin (Chatham, Ont.) and Gord Ash (Toronto, Ont.) both of the Milwaukee Brewers.

In our first year, 2001, 11 Canadians were in the majors, before Canada Day ... LHP Rheal Cormier (Cap Pele, N.B.) of the Phillies, LF Rob Ducey (Cambridge, Ont.) Montreal Expos, 3B Corey Koskie (Anola, Man.) Minnesota Twins, RHP Chris Reitsma (Calgary, Alta.) Cincinnati Reds, 1B Matt Stairs (Fredericton, N.B.) Chicago Cubs, RHP Jeff Zimmerman (Kelowna, BC) Texas Rangers, Paul Quantrill (Port Hope, Ont.) Jays, Eric Gagne (Mascouche, Que.) Los Angeles Dodgers, Walker and Clapp.

So the current total of 17 this season is a long way from 1984 when there were two Canucks in the majors: Terry Puhl (Melville, Sask.), Houston Astros and Doug Frobel (Ottawa, Ont.), Pittsburgh Pirates.

Our 23nd annual team includes major leaguers and minor leaguers. Fans can only dream that Canada could have put a team on the field like this one in March for the World Baseball Classic.

And as Jackie Gleason used to say ... and away we go ...

Former ABC and Auburn slugger Edouard Julien (Ancienne-Lorette, Que.) will hit lead off.

The Lineup

1. Edouard Julien

Leading off, as he did for Canada in Arizona during the World Baseball Classic, is Julien (Ancienne-Lorette, Que.) who started the season at triple-A St. Paul. He is making his first start and is on our roster for the second time.

When Freddie Freeman returned to Los Angeles Dodgers camp after the WBC, he was asked if Canada had any future major leaguers on the team that went 2-2. Freeman went 2-for-2 answering “Bo Naylor and Edouard Julien.” Julien led Canada batting .538 (7-for-13) with two solo homers.

Langley Blaze grad Tyler O’Neill (Maple Ridge, BC).

2. Tyler O’Neill

Batting second and patrolling centre is O’Neill from Walker’s home (Maple Ridge, BC), who earned back-to-back Gold Glove awards in 2020-21 with the Cardinals. He will be making his sixth Canada Day start. In April, manager Oliver Marmol ripped O’Neill for not hustling when he was gunned down for the final out of the seventh by Ronald Acuna. Down three runs, seven outs left and you challenge Atlanta’s Acuna one of the best arms in the majors? Good luck. Dan Plesac and the MLB Network crew defended O’Neill after looking at Statscast numbers.

In this very un-Cardinal like year -- where they have done so many un-Cardinal way things -- he has not played since May 4 -- due to a back injury. Expected to return to the last-place Cards before the All-Star break, he’s been on the shelf since early May. He batted .615 (8-for-13) in the WBC with four RBIs. He has a .228 average with two homers, six RBIs and a .620 OPS.

Freddie Freeman played for Canada to honour his late mother’s memory and he’s hitting third.

3. Freddie Freeman

Making his 11th Canada Day start and hitting third is DH Freeman of the Dodgers. Freeman is WBC-eligible since his parents grew up in Windsor, Ont. He led the majors in lobbying Canadians to play in the WBC. When the camera zoned in on Freeman with a Canuck base runner at first last year, he was saying “so are we playing in the WBC?”

Freeman, who collected his 2,000th hit this week, owns a .316 average with league-leading 28 doubles, as well as 14 homers, 47 RBIs and an .940 OPS in 78 games.

Ontario Blue Jay grad Josh Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.) will bat clean up.

4. Josh Naylor

Batting fourth and playing right field is Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.) of the Cleveland Guardians. In the month of June, Naylor batted .373 average (37 for 100) with 10 doubles, two homers and 14 RBIs. His 58 RBIs are fifth most in the majors.

Naylor is batting .296 with 18 doubles, 10 homers, 58 RBIs and an .812 OPS in 70 games. This is Naylor’s fifth start and seventh time on the roster.

Vlad Guerrero (Montreal, Que.) receives the Tip O’Neill Award for the 2021 season from Scott Smith, a member of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame’s board of directors.

5. Vlad Guerrero

Hitting clean-up and playing third in his sixth start is Guerrero (Montreal, Que.) of the Blue Jays. He has been at first base this year for the Jays, but with the depth we have at first and DH, we figure he is the best suited to make the move as he has had previous experience.

Two years ago on Canada Day, he had a 1.117 OPS and a year ago he was at .843. He’s at .799 this year. Down a little, but he has 17 doubles, 12 homers (including three at the Rogers Centre) and 51 RBIs.

Former Etobicoke Rangers 1B Joey Votto (Etobicoke, Ont.)

6. Joey Votto

Votto (Etobicoke, Ont.) is hitting sixth for the Cincinnati Reds and he’ll be at first base for our team. He has seniority and is not done yet. That was evident in his first game back after shoulder surgery last August and two rehab stints. He belted a homer and a two-run single in that contest.

He earns $25 million this year in the final year of his contract. He has an option for $20 million (with a $7 million buyout) for 2024. He is Canada’s third highest paid athlete behind Golden State Warriors Andrew Wiggins (Toronto, Ont.), who made $31,579,390 and Jamal Murray (Kitchener, Ont.) of the Denver Nuggets, who earned $27.295 million.

Votto played his 2,000th game Friday, the first Canuck to do so. The Etobicoke Rangers grad is in his 16th start and 18th appearance on the team. This season Votto is hitting .167 with three homers, eight RBIs and a .772 OPS in eight games.

Ontario Blue Jays grad C Bo Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.)

7. Bo Naylor

Catching and preparing to throw out runners -- as he has done this week, including one on a terrible pitch out so bad it looked like a high inside knockdown pitch to a right-handed hitter -- is Josh’ younger brother Bo Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.). Josh hit 50 homers in 449 games (1,762 at-bats) in the minors, while Bo went deep 57 times in 405 games (1,461 at-bats) coming through the system.

Starting the season at triple-A Columbus he batted .254 with 12 doubles, a triple, 13 homers and 48 RBIs. He had an .890 OPS in 60 games. With the Guardians he is hitting .182 in 10 games with a homer and two RBIs. This is Naylor’s second start and third time on the team.

Former Okanogan Athletics OF Jared Young (Prince George, BC).

8. Jared Young

Playing left field and hitting eighth is Young (Prince George, BC). Young was on the club before he made his debut Wednesday with a home run to right off Philadelphia Phillies ace Aaon Nola at Wrigley Field. He tripled off Taijuan Walker on Thursday and tripled off Cal Quantrill (Port Hope, Ont.) on Friday. It was the fifth time ever a Canadian hitter has faced a Canadian battery combo (Quantrill and Naylor) and the first time a hit was recorded since 1883.

Before being promoted, he was hitting .326 with 13 homers, 45 RBIs and a 1.030 at triple-A Iowa. Young played in six games with the Cubs last season. This is Young’s first start and fourth time on the team.

Former ABC SS Otto Lopez (Montreal, Que.)

9. Otto Lopez

Lopez could be one of the best to ever play shortstop for Canada. Tis a position we have trouble developing ... like the Expos. For years, the late Jim Fanning always said that the Expos best shortstop was Condredge Holloway, who never had an at-bat, choosing football. In the WBC, Lopez led the team in RBIs with six, hitting a solo homer and batting .294 (5-for-17).

At triple-A Buffalo this season Lopez is hitting .247 with a homer and 22 RBIs. For Lopez, it is his second start and the third time on our team.

Former North Delta Blue Jays LHP James Paxton (Ladner, BC) left, with teammates at the 2006 IBAF 18U Baseball World Cup in Cuba.

Starter _ LHP James Paxton

The Big Maple is -- and isn’t -- well rested for this start. He has not had a Canada Day start since 2020, but he has the lowest ERA (2.70) plus a 4-1 record in nine starts for the Boston Red Sox, after working 7 2/3 scoreless against the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre Friday night.

The former North Delta Blue Jay, Paxton (Ladner, BC) has fanned 61 in 50 innings in ninth starts. It is his sixth Canada Day start and his 10th time on the staff.

Our coaching staff is deep: Justin Morneau (New Westminster, BC) of the Minnesota Twins and Clapp, Mr. Canada on the international stage, and Walker will be on the staff.

Looking after our pitchers will be: New York Yankees scout and recent Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Denis Boucher (Lachine, Que.), Cubs executive and TV star RHPs Ryan Dempster (Gibsons, BC) anchor of our Canada Day team for 13 consecutive years, Jeff Francis (North Delta, BC) the former Colorado Rockies ace, Gagne and Quantrill

Former Ontario Blue Jays Jordan Romano (Markham, Ont.) can close things out.

Closer _ Jordan Romano

And to close things out our team will do just like the Blue Jays due in the ninth inning -- turn to Jordan Romano (Markham, Ont.)

He hit Canada Day with 24 saves (tied for the most in the majors with Cleveland’s Emmanuel Clase, which is also tied for the most ever by a Blue Jay before the All-Star break (B.J. Ryan in 2006).

He was an All-Star in 2022 winning the Canadian Hall of Fame and Museum’s 2022 Tip O’Neill award, the 3rd Blue Jay ever to receive the award, joining Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (2021) and Rob Butler (1993). Its his third time as Canada’s best closer and sixth time on the roster.
