OTTAWA- Baseball Canada would like to extend congratulations to Jim Baba, Trevor Grieve and Shari Reiniger upon learning that they’ve been selected as officials by the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) for the baseball competition at the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo, Japan from July 24 to August 9.

Baba, Baseball Canada’s Executive Director, will serve as Technical Commissioner for the six-team Olympic baseball competition that begins on July 29th. A veteran official with the WBSC, Baba recently fulfilled similar roles at the 2019 WBSC U18 Baseball World Cup in Korea and the final round of the WBSC Premier12 event in Tokyo last November.

Grieve, a veteran international umpire, will work his first Olympic Games in Tokyo adding to an already impressive resume that includes two World Baseball Classic events (2013 & 2017) along with the Europe/Africa Olympic Baseball Qualifier that took place last September in Italy.

Reiniger has been involved with the WBSC as Technical Commissioner for 16 years and will perform the same role at Tokyo 2020. In 2018, she was Technical Director at the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup in Viera, Florida and was a Technical Commissioner in 2019 at the WBSC U18 Baseball World Cup and the Opening Round of Premier12 in Mexico.

“On behalf of our membership I’d like to congratulate Jim, Trevor and Shari on their appointments and wish them best of luck in Tokyo,” said Baseball Canada President Jason Dickson. “We take just as much pride in the successes of our Canadian officials as we do in our national teams so it is very important that we applaud these individuals for being the best in their field.”

Grieve and Reiniger will both act as officials in March at the WBSC Baseball Americas Olympic Qualifier as Canada’s men’s baseball team takes a shot at qualifying for Tokyo 2020, while Baba will be Technical Commissioner at the Baseball Final Olympic Qualifier in April.
