Sean Duncan, the best prospect at the Canadian Futures Showcase last month, headlines Doug Mathieson’s Brewers Langley Blaze team headed for Jupiter and the 26th annual Perfect Game World Wood Bat championships.
LHP Duncan (Port Coquitlam, BC), who pitches for the Blaze, was named the best talent under the dome by seven of the 10 evaluators willing to give their opinion. We asked more than that, but ... well you know how it is. Scouting directors pay their scouts for their opinions -- they don’t like reading about them before reports have been filed.
“It used to be when you were scouting you would try and keep a pitcher or a player a secret and draft him,” said one veteran scout. “It seems silly nowadays, but nowadays you almost have to be famous to be drafted.”
Duncan is in that area code -- ranked 77th by Perfect Game for 2026. And that, boys and girls, is first three round territory barring injury.
While college recruiters were looking at Duncan during the action at the Rogers Centre. They won’t be in Jupiter. Duncan is locked up. He has committed to pitch for the Vanderbilt Commodores. The last Canadian pitcher to commit to powerhouse Vandy. Well, apparently Duncan is No. 1.
Last Canuck player?
We have that one: speedy CF Cooper Davis (Mississauga, Ont.) who played for the Mississauga North Tigers, the Ontario Blue Jays and the Junior National Team. He arrived in the fall of 2017 and played four seasons, hitting .300 in 98 games. He’s now a pilot and coaches with Sean Travers’ Tigers.
While most people in Jupiter will be trying to impress for the 2025 draft ... nine months away ... Duncan is not eligible until the 2026 selection process, 21 months away.
Jamie Romak (London, Ont.) will guide the Canadian Premier League team. It used to be the Ontario Blue Jays were regulars in Jupiter, but now the best Ontario Blue Jays will be a part of Romak’s team.
There will be others scattered through other rosters and they’ll be known soon. Canada Premier will compete against Hawaii Elite 2G, Indiana Bulls and USA Prime National/Detroit Tigers Scout Team.
Ontario Blue Jays INF Jordan Jacob (Maple, Ont.)
The top-rated players from the CPBL roster, according to Perfect Game, are RHP Julian Sabourin (Toronto, Ont.) ranked 100th and 1B Jordan Jacob (Maple, Ont.) listed at 103. Jacob is bound for Pitt and Sabourin to Oregon State.
