The Toronto Blue Jays have extended manager Charlie Montoyo’s contract through the 2023 season.
Montoyo, 57, is entering his fourth season as the Blue Jays manager. The native of Florida, Puerto Rico, is coming off a 91-win campaign in which he managed his club to a 47-33 home record while playing home games in three different cities.
Montoyo was named to his role on October 25, 2018 and finished third and fourth in AL Manager of the Year voting in each of the last two respective seasons.
Jays Phelps to MLB roster
The Blue Jays have also selected the contract of right-hander David Phelps to the big league roster.
Phelps, 35, allowed just one earned run in 11 games with the Blue Jays last season, posting a 0.87 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP before being sidelined for the year with a right lat strain in May.
The St. Louis native is going into his third campaign with Toronto, also pitching for the club in 2019. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound veteran was drafted by the New York Yankees in 2008 and has pitched for seven teams during his nine-year career, combining to go 34-38 with a 3.90 ERA and 602 strikeouts.
