Welcome back to the weekly Big Man on Campus column. This week’s edition features a record setting performance on the mound and plenty of offence. Check out the highlights below.

Sabrowski breaks strikeout record

Hutchinson batters didn’t have much of a chance when they stepped in the box against Erik Sabrowski (Edmonton, Alta) in Cloud County’s 3-0 win. Sabrowski threw a complete game, seven inning shutout, surrendering just two hits and a walk. He struck out 18 of the 21 outs he recorded. That bested the previous school record of 15 set in 1990 by Tom Johnsen. 

Williams almost hits for the cycle

Malik Williams (Toronto, Ont.) was swinging a hot stick for Johnson County Community College. The highlight of his week was in an 18-4 Game 2 win over Coffeyville when he went 3-for-3 with five RBIs. Williams roped a double, a triple and a home run in the win, finishing a single away from the cycle. All-in-all he had three multi-hit games and two more with a single hit.

Julien continues solid play

A week after hitting his first home run of his collegiate career Edouard Julien (Quebec City, Que.) was again a force for the Auburn Tigers. In an 11-8 win over the University of Alabama Birmingham he went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a RBI. He collected two hits and another RBI in Game 1 of the Tigers series with Northeastern University. He hit his third home run of the season in Game 2, a 14-8 Tigers win. Auburn dropped the final 2-1 but Julien chipped in with another hit and drove in the lone run.

Spartans drop 3-of-4 despite Ando’s effort

Michigan State Spartan Royce Ando (Mississauga, Ont.) wasn’t intimidated against the No. 10 Clemson Tigers. Ando went 4-for-5 in the 9-7 loss to the national power. He then walked and drove in a run in a 15-4 loss to Illinois. In the Spartans third game of the week Ando had a hit but the Spartans dropped the contest 3-2 to Furman. Michigan State got in the win column in their final game, dropping Illinois 4-2. Ando went 2-for-4 with a RBI in the victory. They were set to take on Illinois again but it was postponed. Next up for the Spartans is a four game set with Niagara.

Etoobicoke Rangers' Ben Donnell (Oakville, Ont.) pitched seven innings allowing oone run for the Mid America Christian Evangels.

Ben Donnell (Oakville, Ont.) went seven innings of one run baseball in an 11-1 Mid America Christian win over Central Christian. He scattered eight hits and struck out nine to improve to 3-0.

Turino a top performer for Jefferson

Matt Turino (Scaborough, Ont.) was an offensive threat for Jefferson Community College last week. In their 13-3 win over McKendree University he went 2-for-3 with a triple, a RBI and a stolen base. His team then took on Crowder in a four game series. In Game 1, a 7-6 loss, Turino went 2-for-4 with a double. Game 2 saw him go 4-for-5 with a stolen base in an 8-6 loss. Jefferson dropped Game 3 by a 3-2 score in which Turino had a pair of hits. Crowder finished off the sweep with a 13-1 thumping. Turino managed a walk in the tough loss.

Gauchos go 0-3-1

Jason Willow (Victoria, BC) had multi-hit games but it wasn’t enough to help the University of Santa Barbara to a win. Willow drove in four runs in an 8-7 loss to Penn State to open the week. In a three-game series with Texas State he had four hits in two losses and a tie. The Gauchos record currently stands at 4-9-1.

Hartig helps Goshen to series win

Ryan Hartig (Woodstock, Ont.) had a 2-for-4 performance with a walk, a RBI and a stolen base to help propel Goshen College to a 4-3 Game 1 win over Cleary. The Maple Leafs also took Game 2 by a 4-2 score. Hartig went 2-for-3 game with a walk, two RBIs and two stolen based in the triumph. Goshen was unable to complete the sweep dropping Game 3, 3-1. Hartig posted 3-for-4 game in the series finale.

Vauxhall Jets grad Ben Erwin (Spruce Grove, Alta.) gained the Niagara Purple Eagles' lone win. 

Erwin earns win in relief

Ben Erwin (Spruce Grove, Alta.) picked up the Niagara Purple Eagles only win of a four game series with the Marshall Herd. Erwin worked five innings of relief, giving up just two hits and one run. He walked three and struck out three in the 7-4 win. 

Oulton stellar in tough loss

Taran Oulton (St. Albert, Alta.) went eight innings but it wasn’t enough as Freed-Hardeman walked off William Woods in the bottom of the ninth. Oulton scattered nine hits and two runs in the 3-2 loss. He walked just one and stuck out nine for the Owls.

Brookman back at it

Archer Brookman (Pointe-Claire, Que.) had another strong showing for Seminole State (OK) last week. Brookman had six hits, including a 3-for-5 game with a double, a home run, two RBIs and a stolen base in an 11-5 win over Western Arizona.

Busy week for Cull, Henry Ford

Henry Ford College had 11 games in a six day span and Alex Cull (Windsor, Ont.) was ready. Cull went 9-for-19 with a 1.177 OPS including a three-hit game in an 11-3 win over Middlesex County. He drove in four runs and walked three times as HFC won five of their 11 games. 


Curtis leads Columbia State

Elliott Curtis (Waterloo, Ont.) went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs in a 13-3 Columbia State win over Wabash Valley. Curtis had a hit in Game 1 of a series with Jackson State. He went 3-for-3 in Game 2 with a walk, two doubles, a home run and two stolen bases. In the final game of the series Curtis hit a double and stole a base. Columbia State won Game 1, lost Game 2 and won the rubber match to take the series.

North Shore Twins grad James Bradwell (Gibsonns, BC) pitched UBC's only win at Coorban. 

Bradwell picks up only win, Cusati has six hits

James Bradwell (Gibsons, BC) spun a gem to salvage a win in the University of British Columbia’s series with Corban. Bradwell threw a complete game in the 4-1. He worked nine innings, allowing seven hits and one run with eight strikeouts. The Thunderbirds dropped 3 of the four games to fall to 8-14 in 2018.

Anthony Cusati (Burnaby, BC) had six hits in these series with Corban. It featured a pair of two hit performances in Games 2 and 4.


Stevenson a staple for Canisius

Despite a strong effort from J.P. Stevenson (New Glasgow, PEI) the Canisius Golden Griffins dropped Game 3 of their series to the Liberty Flames in 11 innings. Stevenson worked seven innings, scattering five hits, a run and two walks, while striking out five hitters in the 5-4 loss. Stevenson currently owns a 2-0 record with a 1.54 ERA for the Griffs.


Wark wins again

Jackson Wark (St. Albert, Alta.) helped the Saint Louis Billikens complete a three-game sweep of Oakland University. Wark got the in Game 3 and went five scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits, walked three and struck out five. He improved his record to 3-1 on the year.

Former Ontario Blue Jays INF Bryce Dimitroff (Hamilton, Ont.) continnued to swing a hot bat. 

Dimitroff a bright spot in dim season

Bryce Dimitroff (Hamilton, Ont.) continued his strong season for the East Central University Tigers. In Game 1 of their series with Northwestern Oklahoma he went 2-for-4 with a walk. The Tigers dropped the contest 7-5. In Game 2, a 9-2 loss, he again had two hits. He swatted a double in the final game of the series, a 7-1 loss. Dimitroff is hitting .306 and has been one of only a few bright spots for the Tigers who are currently 1-19 on the season.

Feuerstake goes deep for Mineral Area
 
It was a solid week for Caleb Feuerstake (Waterdown, Ont.) and Mineral Area College. The Cardinals went 3-1 and Feuerstake had six hits, a walk and two RBIs in the four games. One of the six hits was a home run which came in the only loss of the week. 

Jafine shines against Saginaw Valley State

Adam Jafine (Toronto, Ont.) went 6 2/3 innings to help the University of Charleston win Game 3 of their series with Saginaw Valley State. He surrendered five hits and two runs in the 3-2 win. He issued four free passes and struck out five.

Oklahoma Wesleyan wins 12 in a row

The Oklahoma Wesleyan University Eagles continued to sore as they picked up five wins last week, running their streak to 12 in a row. Christopher Acosta-Tapia (Deauville, Que.) and John Lantigua (Quebec City, Que.) were right in the middle of the action. Acosta-Tapia had a pair of three-hit games and eight hits in total. He also stole three bases in a 9-8 win over the University of Saint Mary.

Eagles of Trois-Rivières' John Lantigua (Quebec City, Que.) enjoyed an eighht-hit week. 

Lantigua, also preseason Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference selection along with Acosta-Tapia, also had eight hits on the week. One of his hits was a home run in an 8-1 Game 2 win over the University of Saint Mary.

Harold hot at the dish

Colton Harold (Abbotsford, BC) reached base 14 times in seven games for Northwestern College. He reached via a hit 10 times, walked three times and was hit by a pitch once. 

Brettell battles in Chippewas loss

Michael Brettell (Fonthill, Ont.) worked 6 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and two runs (zero earned) in Central Michigan’s 3-2, 10 innings loss to the University of South Florida. He walked three and punched out three in the game. The Chippewas went 0-5 on the week and their record dropped to 2-13-1 on the campaign.

Cienfuegos shines on the mound, bashes with the bat

The Northwest Florida State Raiders must be glad they have Miguel Cienfuegos (Laval, Que.). The freshman tossed five innings, scattering four hits and an unearned run with seven strikeouts at the Raiders topped Grand Rapids Community College 9-1. That apparently wasn’t enough production for Cienfuegos as he wreaked havoc in the batters box, as well. In a 4-3 win over Grand Rapids he had a hit and two RBIs. In the game he started he also legged out a pair of triples and drove in two more runs. Next up was Game 1 of the Raiders series with Lewis and Clark Community College. Cienfuegos hit a home run, walked and drove in three runs in the 13-5 win. He had two hits in an 11-6 Game 2 win and another hit, a walk and a RBI as the Raiders continued to roll, winning Game 3 by a 9-7 score.

Coquitlam Reds' grad TJ McCullough (Coquitlam, BC) had five hits for the Dickinson State Blue Hens.

TJ McCullough (Coquitlam, BC) went 5-for-11 for Dickinson State last week. He also posted a .909 OPS along the way.

Rupnik takes off with Jets

Paul Rupnik (Newmarket, Ont.) was again a key contributor for the Newman University Jets. He had nine hits on the week with his best effort coming in a 13-4 Game 2 win over Oklahoma Christian. Rupnik went 5-for-5 with a double, a solo home run and four runs scored out of the leadoff spot. He currently leads the team with a .373 average.

McCook wins four with help from Canadians

Michael Sookdeo (Brampton, Ont.), Tanner Zeggil (Stayner, Ont.) and Tyler Cox (Mississauga, Ont.) helped McCook Community College to a 3-1 record.  Sookdeo had one it in each of McCook’s first four games and went 3-for-5 in the fourth. He hit a home run, walked three times and drove in seven runs.

Zeggil had three hits in the first two games of the week for McCook. He had eight hits with a walk and three RBIs when the week was over.

Cox took the loss in McCook’s game with Northeast. He worked two innings, didn’t give up a hit and allowed an unearned run. He struck out three in the 5-4 loss. Cox rebounded by picking up his first save of the year in a 10-7, Game 1 win over Lamar. He went two scoreless innings, surrendering two hits, a walk, while striking out one. He looked down his second save in Game 3 by going three scoreless innings. He gave up two hits and struck out one in the 10-5 win.

Braun, Yi-Fan Pan pack the punch

It was a good week for a pair of Canadians at Central Washington. Dustin Braun (Landmark, Man.) and Yi-Fan Pan (Langley, BC) lead their team to five wins. Braun got his week going with a hit and a walk in a 6-4 win over Northwest Nazarene. In Game 4, a 10-7 win, Braun had a hit, a walk and a RBI. Central Washington closed out the series with Northwest Nazarene with a pair of games early last week. They then jumped into a four-game set with Concordia University. Braun went 4-for-5 with a RBI in the opener. He had a hit and worked two walks in a Game 3 victory.

Former LLangley Blaze Yi-Fan Pan (Langley, BC) went deep for the Central Washington Wildcats.

Pan blasted a two-run home run and walked twice in the 6-4 win over Northwest Nazarene. He reached twice in the series finale, once with a hit and once by being hit by a pitch. He drove in a pair of runs in the win. Pan had three hits and a walk in the series with Concordia.

Keyes shows off speed

Clayton Keyes (Calgary, Alta.) is burning up the base paths for Central Arizona so far this season. He swiped a base last week to run his total to 18 in 22 games played.

Takhar tacks on eight hit for Northeastern State

Northeastern State’s Zane Takhar (Victoria, BC) proved to be a tough out. Takhar went 8-for-17 with a walk and two RBIs as the Riverhawks went 3-3. He also posted a 1.074 OPS over the six games.

Bourassa posts quality start

Landen Bourassa (Lethbridge, Alta.) gave the University of San Francisco Dons 6 1/3 scoreless innings in their 1-0 Game 4 win over Xavier. He scattered four hits, walked two and struck out seven to move his record to 3-1.

Team Ontario Astros Graeham Luttor (Toronto, Ont.) had a three hit game knoocking in four for the Midway Eagles.

Graeham Luttor (Toronto, Ont.) went 3-for-4 with four RBIs in a 7-4 Game 1 win over Indiana University Kokomo. He chipped in with a hit and a walk in a Game 2 win and then exploded in Game 3. In the 21-10 loss he hit a grand slam and an two-run home run.

Six hits for Webb

California University of Pennsylvania played four games and Kristian Webb (Whitby, Ont.) had six hits. He walked three times and had two RBIs as his team went 4-0.

Falbo a force

Mason Falbo (Mississauga, Ont.) had two hits, a double and a home run in Centre College’s 10-8 win over Hanover. In Game 1 of their series with Oglethorpe he had two more hits and a RBI but Centre College dropped the game 12-11. Game 2 went the way of Falbo’s side and he had a hit and two RBIs. In the finale of the three-game set, an 11-10 loss, he had three hits, a walk and a RBI.

Latimer gets on nine times, Alvernaz pitches in relief and starts

Matt Latimer (Georgetown, Ont.) had six hits, two walks and was hit by a pitch to help Trinity International’s offence. He went 3-for-4 and was hit by a pitch in a 13-7 loss to Miami University Hamilton.
Jordan Alvernaz (Mississauga, Ont.) threw a scoreless inning of relief against Miami University Hamilton and followed it up with a complete game, seven inning start against Bethel. In the start he allowed eight hits, four runs (two earned) with two walks. He took the loss and remains winless on the season (0-2).

Team Ontario Astros grad Reilly Walters (Bowmanville, Ont.) has averaged more thaan a hit per game for Lourdes Gray Wolves.

Walters shines in busy week for Lourdes

Lourdes University played nine games and Reilly Walters (Bowmanville, Ont.) had 10 hits. Walters has played in 13 games in 2018 and owns a .405 average.

Reyes Cruz with four multi-hit games

Tommy Reyes Cruz (Montreal, Que.) had two hits in Clarendon’s 9-4 loss to Seward County. He followed it up with with three, two-hit games in their series with Frank Phillips. The only game he didn’t have multiple hits was Game 3, he had a hit a walk and a RBI in that one.

Connors State continues strong play

The Connors State Cowboys had an impressive week going 5-1. Tony Hrynkiw (Brampton, Ont.) helped with six hits including a 3-for-3 game with four RBIs in a 27-1 drubbing of Bacone. Hrynkiw is hitting .356 on the year with a home run and 23 RBIs in 15 games played.

Schindel sharp for San Diego Christian

San Diego Christian tied Antelope Valley 6-6 to open their week. Tyler Schindel (Victoria, BC) went 2-for-5 in the rare tie. Schindel and his teammates opened a three-game series with Menlo searching for a win but came up empty. They dropped Game 1, 10-2 but Schindel did have a three-hit game. Game 2 went to Menlo by a 4-2 score and they completed the sweep with a 10-9, 10 inning Game 3 win. Schindel hit a home run in in the Game 2 loss. In Game 3 he had a hit and a walk.

Former North Shhore Twins Matthew Reyes (Vancouver, BC) had two hits for Douglas Royals. 

Reyes hits, uses speed

Douglas College won Game 1 but dropped Game 2 in their games with the University of Calgary. Matthew Reyes (Vancouver, BC) went 2-for-4 with a stolen base in the 1-0 win. He went 4-for-6 with two stolen bases in the Royals 16-13 loss.

Avila outstanding for Otero

Samuel Avila (Kamloops, BC) took advantage of his at-bats for Otero College. In their game with Lamar, a 4-3 win, he had a hit and a walk. In the opener of their series with Western Nebraska he reached four times. In the 5-1 win he had two hits, two walks and a RBI along with a stolen base. In back-to-back losses to end the week he combined for three hits, a walk, a RBI and a stolen base.

Coutney, Cox and Kirkwood standouts for Colby

Colby Community College took 3-of-4 from Pratt Community College and currently own a 12-8 record on the year. Matt Coutney (Edmonton, Alta.) hit .466 in the four-game series. Drake Kirkwood (Calgary, Alta.) went 4-for-5 with a triple in a 22-10 Game 2 win and had two hits in their Game 4 win. 

Komonosky a key cog

Ben Komonosky (Saskatoon, Sask.) went 6-for-15 for North Iowa Area. He had two RBIs and a .837 OPS in the five games played.

Former iCase veteran Brady Schnarr (Waterloo, Ont.) worked seven innings for Frontier. 

Schnarr goes seven

Frontier Community College dropped a 7-3 decision to Olney Central College despite a seven inning start from Brady Schnarr (Waterloo, Ont.) Schnarr allowed eight hits, four runs (two earned), with two walks and a strikeout.

Hillier secures series win

With Indiana Tech’s series with Northwestern Ohio knotted 1-1 they handed the ball to Brandon Hillier (Orangeville, Ont.). Hillier went six innings allowing just three hits. He gave up one run, walked two and strikeout four in a 2-1 win. 

Chester gets the ball in Game 4

Fynn Chester (Victoria, BC) went 5 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and three runs (one earned) in a 10-3 win over Utah State Eastern. He issued just one walk and struck out nine for Salt Lake Community College.

Cherry works three games in a row

If in doubt, give the ball to Graeme Cherry (Millarville, Alta.). That appeared to be the philosophy for Minnesota-Crookston. He worked a scoreless 1/3 of an inning in an 11-10 win over West Virginia Wesleyan. The next game he went a scoreless inning with a strikeout as the Golden Eagles beat Greensboro College 18-11. He then went 2 1/3 scoreless against Missouri St. Louis, a game the Golden Eagles won 7-3. He allowed two hits and struck out four in the win. Cherry got the ball one more time against Northwood and picked up the win. He tossed 1 1/3 innings, giving up three hits and a run with one strikeout.

Former Abbotsford Cardinals' Tanner Rempel (Abbotsford, BC tripled for Colorado Mesa. 

Rempel slams Cougars

Tanner Rempel (Abbotsford, BC) hit a triple and scored on an error to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Colorado Mesa Mavericks went on to pick up a 7-6, 11 inning Game 2 win over Colorado-Colorado Springs. He then hit a grand slam in an 8-4 Game 4 victory helping the Mavericks complete the four-game sweep. Rempel had three hits in the series and is hitting .395 so far this season. This week the Mavericks take on Metropolitan State Denver before a four-game set with Colorado State University Pueblo.

Hendra-Brown helps Linfield to series win

Linfield College took 2-of-3 from Puget Sound last week with the help of Alex Hendra-Brown (Victoria, BC). In Game 1, a 12-8 win, he went 2-for-5. He had a hit and a walk in a Game 2 loss. In the final game of the series, a 10-5 Linfield win, he went 3-for-4 with a walk, a double, a home run and three RBIs.

It was another week packed full of good performances for Canadians in college baseball. The season continues to heat up so don’t miss the action. Check back in a week to see what happened on the field.
