BMOC Week 11

By Matt Betts

Canadian Baseball Network

Major League Baseball Opening Day is tomorrow. And the college baseball season continues to heat up.

Safe to say it’s a good time to be a baseball fan.

We have all the Canadian college highlights from the week of March 28 to April 3 wrapped up right here. Let’s go.

O’Toole K’s nine in relief, named Pitcher of the Week

Iowa Western needed length from Evan O’Toole (Bridgewater, NS) out of the bullpen in Game 1 against Southeastern Community College after their starter gave up five runs and didn’t get an out in the first inning. O’Toole came up with six scoreless innings to help the Reivers get back in the game. He allowed seven hits, walked one, and struck out nine, while the Reivers marched back for an 8-6 win.

For his efforts, he was named the NJCAA Division I Pitcher of the Week.

Irvine outstanding in Lassen’s blowout win

Connor Irvine (Victoria, BC) threw a complete game shutout for Lassen College in their 10-0 victory over College of the Redwoods. He allowed five hits and struck out 14 in his nine innings.

Irvine is the Canadian Baseball Network College Player of the Week for March 28 to April 3.

Consigli the MAAC Rookie of the Week, again

For the third time this season right handed pitcher Peyton Consigli (Fonthill, Ont.) has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week. Consigli worked two scoreless innings in relief of teammate Matt Duffy (Burlington, Ont.) in Canisius’ 5-4 Game 1 loss to Quinnpiac. He yielded a hit and struck out three. Back in action in the finale, he picked up his second save in a 5-4 win. He walked one and punched out three over two innings.

Kush named Canisius Student-Athlete of the Month

Kyle Kush (Guelph, Ont.) has played in 24 of the Golden Griffins’ 25 games and hit .271 so far this season. Last week in three games against Quinnipiac, he posted a pair of hits and a walk in a 2-1 MAAC series win. For his work in March, he was named a Canisius Student-Athlete of the Month.

Russo rakes

The title of this one is simple, but accurate. Luigi Russo (Kelowna, BC) had one of the better games in all of college baseball when his Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops downed Oberlin 17-10. He was 5-for-7 with a grand slam and a solo home run in the high-scoring affair. He also found time to swipe a base. But that wasn’t all for him on the week. In his team’s other three games, he combined to put up six more hits, three walks, three more RBIs, another three stolen bases, and was hit by a pitch.

Ontario Terriers alum Connor O’Halloran (Mississauga, Ont.) struck out eight in seven scoreless innings in his start for the Michigan Wolverines against Iowa. Photo: University of Michigan Athletics

O’Halloran holds Hawkeyes scoreless

Southpaw Connor O’Halloran (Mississauga, Ont.) tossed seven scoreless innings for the Michigan Wolverines in their 2-0 Game 2 Big Ten Conference win over Iowa. The former Ontario Terrier gave up four hits, walked two, and struck out eight.

Wojtarowicz exits with lead

Andre Wojtarowicz (Oakville, Ont.) threw six innings and allowed two runs on five hits in Frontier Community College’s Game 3 loss to Southwestern Illinois. The left-hander walked two, struck out four and left the game with his team up 4-2. But the bullpen coughed up six in the top of the seventh and the Bobcats would go on to lose the game 8-4.

Canadians arms step up for Sacramento State

Two Canadian hurlers stood out on the mound for the Sacramento State Hornets last week.

Eli Saul (Vancouver, BC) continued his ace-like season by throwing six innings and surrendering two runs on seven hits in the Hornets’ 7-5 Game 1 win over Utah Valley. He walked three and punched out six. He’s now 3-0 with a team best 2.79 ERA in seven starts and 38 2/3 innings.

Noah Takacs (Victoria, BC) made his appearance during a midweek loss to Pacific. Takacs came out of the bullpen in the second inning of the 5-2 loss to work 5 1/3 scoreless innings. The right-hander held the Tigers to one hit and a walk, while striking out three.

Goodall throws seven against No. 1 Tampa

Game 1 of Embry Riddle’s series with the No. 1 Tampa Spartans ended in a 4-0 defeat, but that shouldn’t take anything away from the start Garrett Goodall (Nanaimo, BC) had. He lasted seven innings and gave up two runs on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

Patrick pitches well as Northampton walks off

Tylar Patrick (Barrie, Ont.) scattered three runs (two earned) on seven hits over six innings for Northampton in their game against Sussex County. He struck out five Skylander hitters. Down 6-5 in the ninth, his team would go on to score two in the bottom half of the inning for a 7-6 walk-off win.

Vauxhall Jets alum Jack Mount (Val-des-Monts, Que.) allowed just two runs in five innings in his start for Cloud County. Photo: Vauxhall Academy

Mount takes the mound, Poole provides power

The Cloud County Thunderbirds used strong performances from a Canadian pitcher and position player to help them take three of four from Butler Community College.

Jack Mount (Val-des-Monts, Que.) threw five innings and allowed two runs on four hits. He walked three and struck out four in an 8-3 Game 3 win.

Tom Poole (Calgary, Alta.) was held hitless in the opener of the four-game series, but the opposing pitchers couldn’t keep him down for long. Poole hit a three-run home run and finished 4-for-6 with four RBIs and a stolen base in a 13-11 Game 2 victory. He left the yard again in Game 3, this time for a solo shot, and walked in the 8-3 win. During the finale, he was 3-for-6 with four RBIs and a stolen base. He legged out two triples in the series-clinching victory.

Duffy, Pouliot pitch well for Canisius

Week two of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action for the Canisius Golden Griffins saw them travel to Hamden, Conn., to take on Quinnipiac.

Matt Duffy (Burlington, Ont.) received the ball in Game 1 and he conceded five runs (one earned) on six hits over six innings in a 5-2 loss. He walked one and struck out 12 but took the loss to fall to 3-2.

Chris Pouliot (Boischatel, Que.) was the pitcher in Game 2 for the Griffs. He went five innings and surrendered three runs (two earned) on five hits in a 15-9 victory. He issued a pair of walks and struck out eight to pick up his fifth win of 2022.

Weisner continues hitting ways

Jonah Weisner (Mission, BC) put together an eight-hit week as NAIA No. 12 Ottawa ran the table at 4-0. Weisner was 4-for-6 with two RBIs and a stolen base in a 13-6 victory over Baker. The following game, a 5-3 win in Game 1 against Kansas Wesleyan, he went 3-for-5. He also swiped a pair of bases and walked in the four games.

Cust, Simpson prove pivotal in Colby’s 3-2 week

Both Brayden Cust (Edmonton, Alta.) and Cleary Simpson (Elnora, Alta.) had a huge impact for the Colby Community College Trojans.

In six games, Cust had seven hits, including a 4-for-4 game with a RBI in a 6-5 Game 1 loss to Dodge City. In addition to the hits, he walked three times and drove in three runs. His production wasn’t limited to the batter’s box, however. He threw a scoreless inning, allowing a hit, a walk and striking out two in an 18-5 win over Otero. Back on the mound in a 13-8 Game 2 win over Dodge City, he tossed another scoreless inning with a walk.

Simpson collected seven hits, walked twice and drove in two in five games.

Langley Blaze alum Brandon Nicoll (Coombs, BC) had eight hits - including two home runs - in four games for the Southern Arkansas Muleriders. Photo: Southern Arkansas Athletics

Nicoll hits walk-off home run

Brandon Nicoll (Coombs, BC) was a menace for the No. 8 Southern Arkansas Muleriders. He hit a solo home run to open the scoring, and then a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to help his team to a 5-4 win in Game 1 of their series with Henderson State. In the other three games during the week, he put up six more hits, a walk, three RBIs and a stolen base.

Columbus comes through in Wharton series win

Another week meant another set of productive games for Wharton County’s Ben Columbus. He got things started with a 3-for-5 effort with a home run, a walk, three RBIs and two stolen bases as the Pioneers doubled up Galveston 16-8 in Game 1 of their three-game set. He had a hit, a walk and two RBIs in a Game 2 win, before chipping in a hit and two walks in a Game 3 loss.

UBC bounces back for three-win weekend

Coming off being swept by No. 3 Lewis-Clark State the previous week, the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds were looking for strong performances in their series with Eastern Oregon. They got just that on the mound from Shane Laforest (Belle River, Ont.), Branden Woods (Red Deer, Alta.), and Ryan Beitel (Surrey, BC).

Laforest took the ball in Game 1 and delivered seven innings of one-run baseball in a 10-4 win. He yielded four hits, walked two, and struck out three to move to 4-3 on the year.

Woods pitched seven innings of his own in a 6-3 Game 2 victory. He allowed three runs on six hits and struck out eight to improve to 2-0.

Beitel picked up his third win with 5 1/3 innings of work. He scattered three runs (two earned) on nine hits, with two walks and four punch outs in an 8-4 Game 3 win.

Offensively, the charge was led by Brandon Hupe (Vancouver, BC), Jonny McGill (Richmond, BC), and Nolan Weger (Surrey, BC).

Hupe had four hits, four walks, four RBIs, two stolen bases and a hit by pitch.

McGill mashed seven hits and three RBIs. He went 4-for-5 in the Game 1 victory.

Weger also had seven hits, but he added a walk and two RBIs. He put up three hits in both the second and third games.

The T-Birds won all three games, with the fourth being cancelled.

Team Manitoba alum William Hlady (Dauphin, Man.) struck out 12 and gave up just two runs in 5 2/3 innings in his start for Valley City State. Photo: Valley City State Athletics

Hlady pitches into the sixth

William Hlady (Dauphin, Man.) gave up two runs over 5 2/3 innings for Valley City State in their 7-2 Game 4 win over Viterbo. He worked around five hits and a pair of walks, while striking out 12 to earn the win. The victory secured a series split for the Vikings.

Nantau and Whitehead hit as Kats split with Niagara County

The NJCAA series between Erie Community College and Niagara County Community College last week was one to keep an eye on as it pitted the 14-7 Kats against the 15-5 Thunderwolves.

Andrew Nantau (Windsor, Ont.) had five knocks, two walks, three RBIs and a stolen base for the Kats.

Carter Whitehead (Hamilton, Ont.) started the series with a 3-for-4 game. He then combined for three hits, two walks and an RBI in the third and fourth games.

Erie took games 1 and 4 of the series.

Letson throws six scoreless

Adam Letson (Elmira, Ont.) spread seven hits over six scoreless innings in Lakeland’s matchup with Owens. He struck out five in the eventual 2-1, 14-inning win.

Long relief from Yusypchuk

The second game of Chandler-Gilbert’s doubleheader with South Mountain saw Andrew Yusypchuk (St. Albert, Alta.) throw 5 1/3 innings of relief. The Okotoks Dawgs alum gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits, with three walks and four strikeouts in the 7-6 win.

Dieppe Cardinals alum Declan Buckle (Corner Brook, Nfld.) had 10 hits - including three home runs - in five games for Minot State. Photo: Minot State Athletics

Buckle, Gallagher relish Beavers busy week

Six games in seven days was no big deal for Declan Buckle (Corner Brook, Nfld.) and Blake Gallagher (Fredericton, NB) of the Minot State Beavers.

Buckle played in five games and had 10 hits, five RBIs, and was hit by a pitch. Three of the 10 knocks were home runs. The first, a two-run shot, came in a 5-2 win over Wayne State. The second and third came in a 6-4 Game 2 win over Upper Iowa. He launched a two-run and a solo home run in the victory.

Gallagher stockpiled eight hits, walked twice, drove in four, stole a base and was hit by a pitch. He made the start on the mound in the 6-4 win against Upper Iowa. The right-hander threw three innings and allowed three runs on four hits. He walked one and struck out six.

Hunt hits as Aggies take series

Ethan Hunt (Elginburg, Ont.) amassed five hits, five walks and five RBIs in Oklahoma Panhandle State’s 2-1 series win over Central Christian. The one-time Toronto Met hit a home run in games 2 and 3.

Austin, Gilbert lead NEO A&M to 5-0 record

It was a fun week to be a member of the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Norse. Nolan Austin (Kamloops, BC) and Antony Gilbert (Montreal, Que.) had big performances.

Austin hit three home runs in the five wins and finished with seven hits total. He walked once, drove in eight and stole a base, as well.

Gilbert collected six hits, worked three walks, drove in four and stole three bases. He had a hit in every game.

Marshalltown has Canadian masher

Liam Allen (St. Andrews, Man.) hit a home run and completed his week with six hits and seven RBIs for Marshalltown Community College. The long ball was part of a 3-for-6 game with five RBIs in an 18-15 Game 3 loss to Northeast.

Boucher and Hammond bash for D’Youville

Teammates playing well seems to be a bit of a theme this week. Alec Boucher (Essex, Ont.) and Ethan Hammond (Oakville, Ont.) are another example of that for D’Youville.

Boucher amassed six hits, three walks and two RBIs as the Saints dropped two of three to Bridgeport. His best game came in a 6-5 Game 3 loss when he went 3-for-3 with a pair of walks.

Hammond stroked six hits, too. He also swiped a pair of bases.

Ontario Blue Jays alum Jaden Brown (Mississauga, Ont.) had four hits in four games for UT Arlington. Photo: UT Arlington Athletics

Brown has three-hit game

Jaden Brown (Mississauga, Ont.) closed out his week with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with a walk in UT Arlington’s 5-2 Game 3 win over Louisiana Monroe. Over the course of the three previous games, he had a hit, two walks and an RBI.

Mendham makes a difference for Cowboys

It was a must-see matchup when Oklahoma State took on rival Oklahoma in a midweek contest. David Mendham (Dorchester, Ont.) was 3-for-4 with a solo home run and a double for the Cowboys in a 7-6 loss. He carried the momentum from that performance into a Big 12 weekend series with Kansas State. During the three games, he had four hits, three walks, and a RBI as his team took two of three. He again went 3-for-4 in a 7-2 loss in Game 3.

Two starts and two wins for MacNeil, Chartier supplies offence

Owen MacNeil (Georgetown, Ont.) took to the mound for the University of Charleston twice last week, picking up the win in both games. His first start came in an 8-1 victory over Fairmont State when he worked 6 1/3 innings and allowed one run on four hits. He walked a pair and struck out four. On Sunday, he was on the mound again, this time in a 20-3 drubbing of West Liberty. The former Ontario Terrier threw four innings and gave up three unearned runs on three hits, with two walks and five strikeouts.

Eric Chartier (Newmarket, Ont.) added five hits, three walks, five RBIs, a stolen base and two hit by pitches to fuel the Golden Eagles’ offence. He was a doubles machine, legging out five in the four games.

Another Terrier alum starts twice

Like his former high school teammate MacNeil, Virginia Commonwealth University’s Campbell Ellis (Georgetown, Ont.) also started two games. Ellis toed the rubber in a midweek game against former VCU pitching coach and current William and Mary head coach Mike McRae and the Tribe. The lefty tossed three scoreless innings and surrendered three hits, while striking out two to pick up his first win of 2022. He was back in action in the rubber match of the Rams’ three-game set with George Mason. In that one, he threw four scoreless innings, again allowing three hits. He struck out four as his team took the game 15-5.

Worthen appears in two games for Saints

On the theme of former Ontario Terriers, Sam Worthen (Guelph, Ont.) made his way into a pair of games for the D’Youville Saints. He threw a scoreless 1/3 of an inning and walked one in a 9-5 Game 2 loss to Bridgeport. Game 3 saw him back on the mound, this time for much longer. The right-hander provided five scoreless innings of relief in a 6-5 loss. He yielded five hits with two strikeouts.

Okotoks Dawgs Academy alum Noah Geekie (Strathclair, Man.) pitched seven scoreless innings in his start for Emporia State. He also went 3-for-5 at the plate in the same game. Photo: Emporia State Athletics

Geekie spins seven

Noah Geekie (Strathclair, Man.) held Rogers State scoreless over seven innings in Emporia State’s 10-0 Game 3 win. He conceded two hits, walked three and struck out four to improve to 4-1. If that wasn’t enough, he also went 3-for-5 with three RBIs in the game. He finished the week with six hits for the Hornets.

Mahoney hits, Lake Michigan splits

After their previous 10, yes 10, games postponed, the Lake Michigan Redhawks finally got back on the diamond for a doubleheader against Grand Rapids. Jacob Mahoney (Toronto, Ont.) put together a 3-for-4 game with an RBI in a 14-6 win. The Redhawks dropped the second game by a 4-0 score but Mahoney managed a hit.

McEachern gets on eight times

Matt McEachern (Burlington, Ont.) of the Lourdes Gray Wolves collected five hits, a pair of walks, an RBI and a hit by pitch in four games. He twice had a multi-hit game, the first in an 8-5 win over Madonna and then again an 8-7 loss to Concordia.

Hurford hurls 5 1/3

The 5 1/3 innings Dawson Hurford (Langley, BC) supplied the Western Nebraska Cougars helped them to a 5-4 Game 1 win over Lamar. Hurford allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits. He walked two and struck out two en route to the win.

Liam Bushey (Mission, BC) put his offensive abilities on display again with seven hits, a walk and five RBIs as Mineral Area won all four of their games this past week.

MacDonald pitches Douglas to first win

The Douglas College Royals opened their season with a pair of games against Olympic over the weekend. They dropped Game 1, 8-7, so they were looking for a solid start from Nolan MacDonald (Parksville, BC) in the second game of the doubleheader. And they got it. Macdonald allowed one run on four hits over six innings. He walked three and struck out five in a 4-3 win.

Villenueve takes on defending champs

Robin Villeneuve (Gatineau, Que.) got the ball for Weatherford College in their series finale with defending NJCAA national champion and No. 3 McLennan College. Villeneuve threw eight innings, and gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits, with three walks and five punch outs. It was a good outing, but not enough as Weatherford dropped the contest 4-2.

Jalbert throws complete game

There was no need for a bullpen in St. Joseph’s (ME) 5-1 win over Norwich. That’s because Samuel Jalbert (Mascouche, Que.) tossed all seven to earn the win. He surrendered the one run on two hits. He walked one and countered the free passes with eight strikeouts.

MacMillan strikes out eight

Blake MacMillan (Mississauga, Ont.) surrendered one run on two hits over five innings in Niagara’s 4-2 Game 3 loss to Fairfield. He walked one and struck out eight of the 15 outs he recorded.

Williams top 10 in average

Malik Williams (Toronto, Ont.) possesses a .358 average for the Lipscomb Bisons. That’s good for 10th best in the ASUN Conference. Last week, he chipped in six more hits, three walks and five RBIs as the Bisons lost to Vanderbilt and then swept Bellarmine.

Four two-hit games for Huntington’s Lichty

Consistency was the name of the game for Daniel Lichty (Denfield, Ont.). He had two hits in all four games for Huntington University. One of the hits was a solo home run in a 15-2 win over Spring Arbor. He also walked five times, drove in five and stole four bases.

Fabian hits home run in series-clinching game

Two hits, one of which was a solo home run, and two walks from Matt Fabian (Toronto, Ont.) powered Ithaca to a 9-3 Game 3 win over St. Lawrence. In the three other games earlier in the week, he had four hits, a walk and three RBIs.

Marriott a staple in Hendrix lineup

Zach Marriott (Oakville, Ont.) has firmly positioned himself in the middle of the Hendrix College lineup all season, and for good reason. He leads the team with a .386 batting average and has a 1.127 OPS through 24 games. Last week, he had six hits, walked four times, drove in two, stole a base and was hit by two pitches. He left the yard for a solo shot in an 8-7 loss to Ozarks.

Five hits for Parkland’s Moffat

He slammed a two-run homer in a 13-5 Game 2 win. Unfortunately for the Bearcats that was their only victory of the series.
