Canadian Baseball Network
Nine hundred and ninety three Canadians currently suit up for a college baseball team that competes primarily south of the border. That means there’s yet again a lot of highlights to catch up on from the past week. Let’s get to it.
Coutney smashes way into record books, named Conference USA Hitter of the Week
There may not be a hotter hitter in all of college baseball than Old Dominion’s Matt Coutney (Wetaskawin, Alta.). The infielder hit five more home runs last week to bring his season total to 21. That’s good for the single-season record for the Monarchs. In all, he played four games and collected seven hits, four walks, eight RBIs and was hit by a pitch. He twice had a two-homer game, the first against William & Mary and the second in Game 3 against Florida Atlantic.
Machibroda mashes three homers, named Mid-South Conference Player of the Week
Infielder Nolan Machibroda (Saskatoon, Sask.) launched three home runs in four games for Cumberland. The first was a two-run shot that came in a 19-6 Game 1 win over Tennessee Southern. Machibroda then hit a three-run shot in a 26-10 victory in Game 2. For good measure, he swatted a two-run home run in a 15-8 Game 3 win. When all was said and done he had nine hits, six walks, and 12 RBIs in four games.
His performance earned him Mid-South Conference Player of the Week honours.
Grant Mon-Dak’s best
The Bismarck State Mystics scored 73 runs in four games against North Dakota College of Sciences. Logan Grant (Calgary, Alta.) pounded out 12 hits, four home runs, walked four times, and drove in 17. The Mystics pushed across 31, yes 31, runs in a Game 3 win where Grant went 5-for-5 with two home runs, two doubles, and nine RBI.
He was later named the Mon-Dak Conference Player of the Week.
Weisner wallops four home runs
Jonah Weisner (Mission, BC) continued his strong season with four home runs in three games this past week. Weisner launched three solo shots in No. 13 Ottawa’s 17-8 Game 1 win over No. 22 Tabor. He was 3-for-4 with a pair of walks in the game. In Game 2, he hit a two-run home run and walked in a 10-4 win. During the finale, a 13-5 victory, he went 2-for-5 with three RBIs. He did all of his damage out of the leadoff spot.
Cuvilier, MacLean make two appearances each for Sullivan County
Sullivan County Community College had not one, but two impactful Canadian pitchers last week.
Layton Cuvilier (Hantsport, N.S.) got the ball for the Generals in Game 4 of their series with Rockland. He allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out six. Despite the strong effort, his team dropped the game 7-1. Cuvilier was back on the mound in a 19-0 win over Westchester. He threw five no-hit innings, which was as long as the game lasted. The lefty walked three with eight strikeouts. Not only did he pitch, Cuvilier also went 9-for-27 on the week with the bat.
Tanner MacLean (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) gave up one run on six hits in five innings of work and the Generals offence put up double digit runs in a 20-1 Game 1 win over Dutchess. MacLean walked one and struck out eight in the complete-game effort. He then came out of the bullpen in a 15-11 victory over Westchester. In that one, he threw 2 2/3 innings, conceding an unearned run on two hits. He struck out three and picked up the win.
MacNeil throws six inning
Logan MacNeil (Vancouver, BC) of the Allen County Red Devils held Neosho County to one run over six innings in a 4-2 Game 1 loss. He surrendered four hits and struck out six. When he exited the game it was knotted at one.
UBC takes 3-of-4 from Corban
With a roster full of Canadians, it seems inevitable that players from the University of British Columbia end up in the BMOC. This week there were four in particular who stood out.
Ryan Beitel (Surrey, BC) got the ball in Game 2 and tossed eight innings of one-run baseball in a tough 1-0 loss. He scattered four hits and a walk, while striking out four. The only run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth.
