Old Dominion University put together one of their best seasons in program history in 2021 when they went 44-16 and were the No. 1 seed at the Columbia Regional.
While it’s always tough to best a 40-win season, the Monarchs are still finding success in 2022 with a 26-9 record.
A big reason for that has been the play of infielder Matt Coutney (Wetaskawin, Alta.). The senior has played in all 35 games and currently leads the team with a .363 average. He’s also owns 18 home runs, 42 RBIs and a 1.303 OPS. He added to his stellar numbers last week by pounding out eight hits, working two walks and driving in 11 in four games. Five of the eight hits left the ballpark for home runs. His team took down No. 8 Virginia 9-2 in a midweek contest before taking two of three from the University of Alabama at Birmingham over the weekend.
For his efforts, he was named the Conference USA Player of the Week on Monday. But that wasn’t all. On Tuesday, he was selected as the Dick Howser Trophy National Player of the Week as announced by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
And now he can add Canadian Baseball Network College Player of the Week for April 11 to 17 to his accolades.
