There were some proud folks in Okotoks, Alta. over the weekend.

That’s because Dawgs alumni outfielder Tyrese Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) and left-handed pitcher Matt Wilkinson (Ladner, BC) were key cogs in the Central Arizona College wheel that rolled to the NJCAA Division I College World Series title.

Wilkinson made his first appearance in Game 1 against Crowder. The southpaw worked a pair of innings, giving up a run on three hits with two walks and a strikeout. He took the loss.

Losing Game 1 is never ideal, but it didn’t seem to bother the Vaqueros as they ran the table the rest of the way.

Their Utah University commit was back on the mound against Wabash Valley in Game 4. This time he worked six scoreless innings and allowed six hits in a 5-4 win. He walked five and struck out seven along the way.

A win over Walter State was followed by a 4-2 triumph over Cowley College in the championship game, sealing the team’s place in history.

Matt Wilkinson is the Canadian Baseball Network College Player of the Week for May 30 to June 5.
