AUSTIN, Texas – Alabama baseball suffered a 6-1 loss at top-ranked Texas on Sunday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The loss moved the Crimson Tide to 5-3 on the season.
Texas was first to strike with one run in the fourth, but Alabama countered with a run of its’ own in the top of the fifth on an Owen Diodati (Niagara Falls, Ont.) solo home run. The Longhorns came right back to post a three-spot in the sixth and add two more in the eighth to regain and hold on to the lead for the 6-1 win.
The win went to Texas starter Tanner Witt (2-0), who allowed one run on four hits and a walk with nine strikeouts. Crimson Tide reliever Luke Holman (0-1) was tagged with the loss.
From Head Coach Brad Bohannon
“Texas kind of took it to us today, had us on our heels early. I really thought the first two games were 50-50 games, so I wasn’t pleased with the way we played today. This was an awesome experience for our kids. We needed this experience going on the road and playing the No. 1 team in the country in a good environment. We’ll grow from this. There were a lot of positives that we learned about our club and a lot of things that we need to improve upon.”
How It Happened
B4 | A 6-3 fielder’s choice with the bases loaded pushed across the game’s first run. (1-0, Texas)
T5 | Owen Diodati sent a 1-2 pitch deep over the wall in right for a solo home run. (1-1)
B6 | Texas brought a pair in with a bases-loaded single. A single in the next at-bat added one more to widen the gap for the Longhorns. (4-1, Texas)
B8 | A balk with runners on the corners scored one for UT. A triple followed, bringing in the man from second for another run. (6-1, Texas)
