Official Energy City Cactus Rats News Release
EDMONTON, Alta. - A new era of baseball has arrived in Edmonton.
The Edmonton Prospects, a staple in Alberta’s baseball scene for nearly two decades, have officially rebranded as the Energy City Cactus Rats.
The announcement, made March 3, comes with a fresh new look, a vibrant identity, and a renewed commitment to growing the game in the region.
“This is more than just a name change—it’s a complete evolution of our team’s identity,” said managing partner Pat Cassidy.“The Energy City Cactus Rats represent the hard work, resilience, and passion of our players, staff, and fans. The Cities of the Metro Edmonton Region are cities built on energy, determination, and innovation, and our new brand reflects that spirit.”
"Energy is a staple for every city in this region and we want to capture that spirit."
A name that defines a team and a city
The new name, Energy City Cactus Rats, is a nod to Edmonton’s identity as a hub of industry and perseverance. The “Energy City” moniker pays tribute to the city’s deep roots in the energy sector, while the porcupine-inspired “Cactus Rats” symbolizes tenacity, grit, and an underdog mentality that has defined the team’s journey over the years.
“The Cactus Rats are tough, adaptable, and always find a way to thrive—just like our team and our fans,” Cassidy added. “We wanted a name that captures the spirit of Edmonton baseball, and we believe we’ve found the perfect fit.”

A bold new look
Alongside the name change, the Cactus Rats introduced a brand-new visual identity, including a dynamic logo set. The new branding features:
-A porcupine-inspired mascot wearing a high-visibility work jacket, wielding a quilled baseball bat—a nod to Edmonton’s working-class roots.
-A secondary logo depicting a determined porcupine in a hard hat, representing the city’s blue-collar spirit.
-A modern wordmark, featuring “Energy City Cactus Rats” in bold, flowing script, reinforcing the team’s connection to the community.
-Additional imagery, including a team truck and an aggressive porcupine, further cementing the team’s rugged and fun identity.
The team’s official colours—blue, gray, neon yellow, brown, black and white—symbolize Edmonton’s energy sector, resilience, and the bright future ahead for baseball in the city.
A history of growth and change
Originally founded in 2005 as the Edmonton Big River Prospects, the team has gone through multiple transformations over the years. From its early days in St. Albert to establishing a home at John Fry Park, and later moving to TELUS Field (now RE/MAX Field), the organization has continuously evolved to meet the growing demands of its fanbase.
Despite challenges, including a hiatus in 2023 while awaiting the completion of Myshak Metro Ballpark, the team has remained a key player in Alberta’s baseball scene. With the new identity in place, the Energy City Cactus Rats are ready to step into a new chapter with excitement and ambition.
What’s next for the Cactus Rats?
The Energy City Cactus Rats baseball team will make their highly anticipated debut under their new name in the 2025 season at Myshak Metro Ballpark. Fans can expect an electrifying season filled with top-tier baseball, community events, and plenty of opportunities to engage with the new brand.
“We’re incredibly excited for this next step in our franchise’s history,” Cassidy said. “This rebrand isn’t just about changing a logo—it’s about embracing the future and creating a legacy that will last for generations. We can’t wait to welcome fans into this new era of baseball in Edmonton.”
The team will be rolling out new merchandise, fan events, and special promotions in the coming weeks, leading up to the first pitch of the 2025 season. Fans are encouraged to follow the team’s social media channels and visit the official website for the latest updates.
