Official Hamilton Cardinals News Release
HAMILTON - Something positive came to the Hamilton Cardinals in the 2020 COVID-19 baseball season after all.
A Brantford Red Sox charity game to celebrate the life of former IBL great and umpire Jamie Corke sparked the competitive spirit, love, and desire to play IBL baseball again for IBL veteran Jamie Richmond.
A two-inning outing and conversation with Cardinals pitcher Stefan Strecker sparked the idea of a return, which led to a conversation with General Manager Jeff Lounsbury.
“Jamie is a competitor and has phenomenal command in the strike zone. Jamie was part of a championship team back in 2013 and he will give us a chance to win each time he takes the ball. He will also be a great locker room presence who will really help our young pitchers develop,” Lounsbury.
Richmond, a Mississauga, Ont., native, was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 31st round of the 2004 MLB draft and spent five years in the professional ranks and compiled a 29-21 record with an ERA of 3.50. He has also represented his country pitching for Team Canada on numerous occasions.
In his five seasons in the IBL, Richmond was a two-time first-team all-star (2013, 2014) and has a career record of 25-16 with 294 strikeouts and 56 walks in 342 innings.
“I am looking forward to getting back on the field, having fun and playing with the talented group of players with the Cardinals,” said Richmond.
The Hamilton Cardinals are a member of Ontario's most elite baseball league, the Intercounty Baseball League. The 100-year old summer league is one of the oldest baseball leagues in the world, with the league established in 1919, drawing significantly more fans, in a friendly ballpark experience, than any league of its kind.
