Massad strikes out 11 for Alderson Broaddus Battlers

FROSTBURG, MD - - The Alderson Broaddus (AB) baseball team split a doubleheader with Frostburg State on Saturday afternoon. AB exploded for 17 runs in a 17-1 victory in the first game and fell 8-5 in the second contest.
Game 1
The Battlers got another dominant outing from Aidan Massad (Leamington, Ont.) as he moved to 3-0 on the season. Massad recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts while only giving up one run in the game.
Cameron Sheets got the Battlers off to a hot start with a two run homer in the first inning. In the top of the second inning, Taylor Cook came up to bat with the bases loaded and drove in all of the runners with a triple. Sheets drove in Cook in the next at bat to make the score 6-0.
The Battlers and Bobcats each scored a run in the third inning and the Battlers were able to tack on two more runs in the fourth inning.
In the top of the fifth inning, Tylyn James reached first on an error while Misael Sanchez and Cook were both hit by a pitch to load the bases. Claus cleared the bases by hitting a double to make the score 12-1. Brandon Gutierrez drove in Claus with a single and Lane Casto earned a single in the next at bat. Chandler Ballenger smashed a home run in the next at bat, extending the AB lead to 16-1.
The Battlers scored one more run in the sixth inning to make the final score 17-1.
Cook led the way going 3-4 while driving in three runs in the first game. Ballenger, Casto, Claus, and Sheets each contributed two hits in the ball game.
Game 2
James led the game off with a single and was brought home by Sheets with an RBI single. The Frostburg bats woke up after a sluggish first game by scoring four runs in the first inning. In the second inning, the Bobcats jumped out two a 7-1 lead with a two run homer.
The Battlers earned some runs back in the third inning by scoring two runs in the third inning. Cook helped AB cut into the lead by driving in two runs in the sixth inning.
Frostburg state tacked on an extra run in the sixth inning to make the final score 8-5.
AB (6-10) will take on Frostburg State (8-12) again tomorrow in a doubleheader at 1 and 4pm.
