Mavericks quiet Dawgs bats

Medicine Hat, AB — The Medicine Hat Mavericks picked up their first win of the Western Major Baseball League season when they defeated the Okotoks Dawgs 6-1 Tuesday night at Athletic Park.

The Mavericks (1-2) got things going in the bottom of the fourth with three runs on four consecutive hits. Designated hitter Colton Wright, first basemen Sal Rodriguez and shortstop Carson Johnson picked up RBIs.

Mavericks starter Jaymon Cervantes kept the Dawgs at bay for 5 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run while striking out five to earn the win.

The Dawgs chased Cervantes after Brandon Sparks (Bellevue University) led off the top of the sixth with a single and scored on a bloop hit to left field by William Hollis (Cisico Community College).

Dawgs starter Carter Robinson (Mesa Junior College) surrendered three earned runs in five innings, struck out three and walked a pair of Mavericks in his first start with the club. Robinson earned the loss.

Corey Jackson (Indiana Hills Community College) came on to pitch the seventh for the Dawgs and allowed two earned runs, three total and struck out one batter.

Andrew Yates (Indiana University) entered in the bottom of the eighth and struck out the side for the Dawgs (2-2).

Hitting ninth was the Mavericks catcher Colton Odland. He led off his half of the seventh inning with a double into the left field corner off Jackson. David Salgueiro laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Collin Ridout (Tennessee Wesleyan University) threw the ball down the right field line, which allowed Odland to score. Later in the inning, the safety squeeze was executed by Nolan Rattai to score Salgueiro.

Still in the bottom of the seventh, Johnson singled to drive in Louie Canjura with two out.

Offensively for the Dawgs, it was the least amount of hits recorded in a game this season. Richard Mascarenias (Linn Benton Community College), Cole MacLaren (University of Pittsburgh) and Nate DeChaine (Morningside College) picked up one hit each for the Dawgs.
