O'Neill, Pivetta agree to one-year deals with Red Sox

Victoria Eagles and Junior National Team alum Nick Pivetta (Victoria, B.C.) has signed a one-year deal with the Boston Red Sox. The 30-year-old right-hander had been eligible for arbitration.

BOSTON, Mass.—The Boston Red Sox have agreed to terms with four arbitration-eligible players on one-year contracts for the 2024 season: Reese McGuire, Tyler O’Neill, Nick Pivetta, and John Schreiber.

The Red Sox have no remaining players eligible for salary arbitration.

McGuire, 28, played in 72 games with the Red Sox last season, batting .267 (50-for-187) with 12 doubles, one triple, one home run, and 16 RBIs while making 51 starts as the catcher. Acquired by Boston from the Chicago White Sox on August 1, 2022, the Washington native has batted .259 (208-for-803) with 51 doubles and 13 home runs in 302 career Major League games with the Toronto Blue Jays (2018-21), White Sox (2022), and Red Sox (2022-23).

O’Neill, 28, was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals on December 8, 2023, in exchange for right-handed pitchers Nick Robertson and Victor Santos. The right-handed hitter played in 72 games for the Cardinals last season, batting .231 (55-for-238) with 14 doubles, nine home runs, and 21 RBIs while making 48 starts in left field, 10 in centre field, and one as the designated hitter. Originally selected by the Seattle Mariners in the third round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, the Maple Ridge, British Columbia native has hit .248 (363-for-1,464) with 67 doubles, 78 home runs, and 217 RBIs in 477 career Major League games, all with the Cardinals (2018-23). He is a two-time Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner, receiving the honours in 2020 and 2021.

Pivetta, 30, pitched in 38 games (16 starts) last season, setting career bests in ERA (4.04), opponent batting average (.208), WHIP (1.12), and strikeout rate (31.2%), while leading the Red Sox in strikeouts (183) and ranking second in innings pitched (142 2/3 IP). In 28 games (eight starts) from May 25 through the end of the season, the right-hander posted a 3.05 ERA (33 ER/97 1/3 IP) with 135 strikeouts. Acquired by Boston from the Philadelphia Phillies in August 2020, the Victoria, British Columbia native is 50-59 with a 4.86 ERA (477 ER/883 2/3 IP) in 196 career Major League games with the Phillies (2017-20) and Red Sox (2020-23).

Schreiber, 29, posted a 3.86 ERA (20 ER/46 2/3 IP) with 53 strikeouts in 46 games (two starts) last season, holding right-handed hitters to a .204 batting average and .599 OPS. In 27 games (two starts) at Fenway Park during 2023, the right-hander recorded a 2.73 ERA (8 ER/26 1/3 IP) and .235 opponent batting average. Claimed off waivers from the Detroit Tigers in February 2021, the Michigan native owns a 3.58 ERA (57 ER/143 1/3 IP) in 139 career Major League games (two starts) with the Tigers (2019-20) and Red Sox (2021-23).
