Ray Carter Cup coming to Oshawa

OSHAWA TO HOST THE BASEBALL CANADA 15U BOYS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN 2018

Oshawa – The best 14 and 15 year old ball players from across Canada will compete for a National Championship in Oshawa this summer. A bid by Baseball Oshawa to host the Baseball Canada 15U Nationals, named the Ray Carter Cup, was approved for a two year period. This will mark the first time ever that Oshawa will host a National Baseball Championship of any level.

“We’re excited and extremely proud to bring the top 14 and 15-year-old ball players from across Canada to Oshawa and to showcase the City of Oshawa and the Durham Region,” said Ken Babcock, president of Baseball Oshawa OLMBA and Chairperson for the 15U Nationals.

The 15U Nationals will take place August 23-26 with Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium serving as the main playing site. Additional diamonds being used for this National event are the two Ajax Sportsplex Pan-Am Fields. There will be 11 teams from across Canada, including the host Oshawa Legionaires, in the nationals with teams representing: Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

Adding to the excitement is the potential of seeing the host Oshawa 15U team being among the contenders for this year’s gold medal.

The Legionaires are coached by Geoff Whent, and they are looking to, not only participate at the Nationals as the host Oshawa team, but contend.

“That has been our goal since finding out Oshawa would be the host of the 15U Nationals. The players and coaching staff have been working hard this winter in prep for what will be an exciting 2018 season,” said Whent. “We can’t wait to represent Oshawa against the best in the country.”

It’s a big year for Oshawa as Jim Lutton was elected to the Baseball Ontario Hall of Fame.

“We are planning a National Championship that will certainly amaze all players, coaches, umpires, volunteers  and fans and provide lasting memories for a lifetime. Fans are definitely going to see some outstanding baseball this August in Oshawa”, said Babcock.

Sponsorship and Volunteer opportunities also exist for this major event. For more information  e-mail k.babcock@rogers.com.
