UMary's Beck, Haney, Hull receive NSIC honours

BURNSVILLE, MINN. – Northern Sun Freshman of the Year Carter Beck leads a quartet of University of Mary scholar-athletes earning 2024 postseason baseball honorus from the NSIC.

Kalem Haney and Mark Schommer both earned All-NSIC first team honours with Beck and Noah Hull gaining second team recognition.

Additionally Hull (Scarborough, Ont.) and Haney (Lethbridge, Alta.) were named to the 2024 NSIC All-Defensive team.

Beck (Carnduff, Sask.) made an immediate impact on the Marauders as he helped UMary qualify for the NSIC tournament for the third time in four seasons. In 37 NSIC games, the freshman hit .353/.417/.604 with a 1.021 OPS and seven doubles, two triples, eight home runs, 38 RBIs and 39 runs scored. The lefty-swinging outfielder – who has played left field and centre - was eighth in the NSIC in RBIs, 12th in runs scored and 18th in home runs. He had a hit in 27 of 37 NSIC games, including 17 multi-hit performances.

Overall, the native of Carnduff, Sask., hit .362/.438/.638 for a 1.076 OPS with 10 doubles, three triples, 11 home runs, 51 RBIs and 49 runs scored. Beck was a perfect 11-for-11 when stealing bases, including a steal of home. He leads the Marauders in runs scored and RBIs.

Beck is just the second UMary player to earn NSIC Freshman of the Year honours, joining Cal James (2021).

Haney, a sophomore from Lethbridge, Alta., is a dynamic leadoff hitter for UMary. This season the UMary second baseman is hitting .367/.468/.567 with a 1.035 OPS. He is second on the team with 47 runs scored, owns 43 RBIs, and has 13 doubles four triples and five home runs. Haney leads the Marauders in steals with 14 in 15 attempts and has reached base 35 times on walks (27) and hit by pitch (8) while striking out just 35 times. Haney owns a hit in 37 of 48 games with 17 multiple hit games. Only once has he gone more than two games without a hit. He also earned NSIC Player of the Week honours this season.

A righthanded reliever from New Ulm, Minn., Schommer has been close to perfect in his senior season. The senior has allowed one run in 21 innings of work covering 12 outings, including one start. He has struck out 31 batters and walked two while giving up nine hits. With a record of 3-0 with four saves, Schommer has a 0.43 ERA and a WHIP of 0.52.

In his first collegiate start he gave up one run on two hits and a walk in four innings against Northern State to earn the win. He has given up a hit in just six of his 12 outings and a baserunner in seven of 12.

For the second straight season, Hull has earned All-NSIC second team honours. Honoured as a first baseman this season, the Marauders’ cleanup hitter was selected as a designated hitter last season. The senior from Scarborough, Ont., is hitting .330/.410/.600 with a 1.010 OPS. He has 11 doubles, 13 home runs, scored 41 times and has driven in 40.

Hull is climbing the all-time leaderboard in home runs and RBIs at UMary. With 31 career home runs, he is third in program history behind Tyler Liffrig (39) and Derek Shoen (37). Hull was the seventh UMary player to crack the century mark in RBIs and is fifth in program history with 113, trailing only Jeff Wedul (141), Liffrig (141), Shoen (135) and Cal James (133).

Hull and Haney, who hold down the right side of the Marauders’ infield, are both first-time All-Defensive Team selections. Hull owns a .989 fielding percentage with 20 double plays and four errors in 369 chances. Haney sports a .973 fielding percentage, making only five errors in 182 total chances with 14 double plays.
