Right-hander Noah Skirrow tossed six scoreless innings for the Philadelphia Phillies’ double-A Reading Fightin’ Phils against the Harrisburg Senators in his final start of the season to earn Canadian Baseball Network Player of the Week honours for the week of September 9 to September 15.
On September 14, the Stoney Creek, Ont., native trotted out to the mound at FNB Field in Harrisburg and proceeded to strike out the side in the first inning.
After getting an easy pop out to shortstop to start the second, he gave up his first hit of the day — a single to left field. But the former Ontario Blue Jay and Great Lake Canadian bounced back with a four-pitch strikeout and then got the third out on a poorly executed bunt.
He followed that up with another clean inning in the third, securing two ground outs and a pop up to short.
Skirrow allowed a leadoff single in the fourth, but then pounded the bottom of the zone with five pitches to the next batter and got a ground ball to shortstop that was converted into a double play. He then fielded a ground ball back to him for the last out of the inning.
In the fifth inning, the 26-year-old right-hander secured a pop out and a ground out before a fielding error by the third baseman put a runner on first. Skirrow then got a ground ball to second to end the frame.
The Canuck hurler returned to the mound for the sixth and allowed a single to lead off the inning. Employing what had worked for him earlier in the contest, he then pounded the zone and got a ground ball back to the mound and recorded an out at second base. With a runner on first, Skirrow was then able to get a fly out in foul territory down the left field line for the second out before securing the final out on a ground ball to the third baseman.
After 74 pitches, Skirrow’s day was done and he left with a 1-0 lead, with the Fightin Phils able to hold on for his sixth win of the season. In his six scoreless innings, Skirrow permitted just three hits and didn’t walk a batter while striking out four, producing a 67.6% strikeout rate. He generated 10 ground balls in the contest.
