Wood homers in Goldeyes' loss to Saints

SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (5-5) lost 16-9 to the St. Paul Saints at Sioux Falls Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Saints (5-5) served as the home team.

Winnipeg led 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth when the Saints erupted for 10 runs. Chris Chinea led off with a double to right-centre. After Josh Allen walked, Max Murphy tripled to centre to drive in both runners. After Goldeyes’ starter Mitchell Lambson struck out John Silviano, Murphy scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.

JC Millan then hit an opposite field home run to right that put St. Paul in front 5-4. The Saints added six more runs after there were two outs on a two-run double from Chesny Young, an RBI double from Chinea, and RBI singles from Allen, Silviano, and Millan.

St. Paul scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Murphy singled leading off and scored from first on a double to left-centre from Silviano. After Millan reached on an error, Mitch Ghelfi’s single through the right side brought home Silviano. Nate Samson chipped in an RBI groundout, while Young hit a two-run homer to right-centre that made it 16-4.

Darnell Sweeney crushed a solo home run to right with one out in the top of the seventh. In the top of the eighth, the Goldeyes loaded the bases with no outs on three consecutive walks. Jonathan Moroney reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Eric Wood (Pickering, Ont.), and the Goldeyes cut the deficit to 16-7 when Kevin Lachance reached on an error. Sweeney followed with an RBI double to right-centre. Logan Hill’s RBI single ushered in Lachance to provide the game’s final margin.

Saints’ starter Matthew Quintana (1-1) picked up the win, allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits in 5.0 innings. Quintana walked three and struck out seven.

Lambson (2-1) took the loss, allowing 10 runs, eight earned, on 11 hits in three and two-thirds innings. Lambson walked one and struck out five.

Lachance opened the game with a walk, took third when Sweeney doubled to right-centre, and scored the game’s first run on a Kyle Martin sacrifice fly.

St. Paul tied the game in the bottom of the second when Silviano reached on a two-out error that scored Allen from third.

Winnipeg quickly regained the lead in the third. Hill hit a ground rule double to left-centre with one out. Two batters later, Wood launched a two-out, two-run home run to left-centre.

In the top of the fourth, Wes Darvill (Richmond, B.C.) reached on a two-out error, stole second base, took third on the ensuing throwing error, and scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-1.

Goldeyes’ reliever Dylan Rheault (Garson, Ont.) worked two and one-third innings of long relief, allowing one earned run. Justin Kamplain and Victor Capellan each pitched a scoreless relief inning.
