TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Left-hander Geremy Guerrero pitched his second shutout of the season as he led No. 22 Indiana State to a 5-0 victory over Valparaiso at Bob Warn Field Friday afternoon.
With the win, the Sycamores moved to 17-8 on the year and 4-1 in Missouri Valley Conference action while Valpo fell to 5-17 and 0-5 in MVC play.
Guerrero retired the first seven Valpo hitters he faced on strikeouts and before pop up to third base ended the run. VU did not record a hit until the sixth inning of play when Brady Renfro led off the inning with a single to right. The Metamora, Ill. native retired 11 batters on strikeouts and allowed only two base hits over nine innings to improve to 7-0 on the season.
The Sycamores went for nine hits on the day, led by a 4-for-4 day at the plate from Aaron Beck who fell a home run short of the cycle. Beck recorded three RBIs while Josue Urdaneta and Miguel Rivera added an RBI each.
Indiana State tallied three runs on three hits in the third inning, all with two outs on the scoreboard. Brian Fuentes kicked off the rally with a hit-by-pitch and moved to third on a Max Wright (Toronto, Ont.) single. Rivera drove a 2-2 pitch to right center for an RBI double before Beck cleared the bases with a triple to the gap in left.
