Elliott: New Royal McDonagh cracks top 50 in Canuck six-figure bonuses

First the Toronto Blue Jays struck:
They signed RHP Aiden Taggart, who was eligible for the 2024 draft. The Blue Jays signed the FieldHouse Pirate to a signing bonus of $155,000 US. We can’t recall the last team (or player) to sign a player in his gap year. Taggart (Grimsby, Ont.) was eligible for the 2025 draft in July.
And then the Kansas City Royals were next. The Royals had some money left over from the 2024 draft and went over it to ink Ryan McDonagh.
The Ontario Blue Jays RHP was given $425,000 by the Royals after dominating with the Canadian Premier League All-Stars. So, he started his pro career in March rather than waiting for the July draft. McDonagh (Milton, Ont.) was given a $425,000 bonus by scouts Adam Stern (London, Ont.), Buddy Gouldsmith, Royals scouting director Brian Bridges and former scouting director Lonnie Goldberg, vice-president, who spent three years living in Guelph while scouting for the Atlanta Braves.
Kansas City spent $13,394,600 of its $13,023,300 bonus pool for a 2.9% overage in 2024. The Royals were able to give McDonagh a $425,000 bonus -- $275,000 counted in KC’s pool and the allowed $150,000.
That brought the Royals’ total signing bonus allotment for 2024 to $13,669,600, a 4.96% bonus pool overage.
McDonagh received the exact same bonus as RHP Chris Reitsma (Calgary Alta.) a first-round pick (34th overall) from the Calgary Rockies and the Junior National Team in 1996. Reitsma pitched seven years in the majors with the Cincinnati Reds, Atlanta Braves and Seattle Mariners. They are tied for 48th overall in Canuck bonuses.
Not that all bonus amounts are created equal -- or get similar results -- but it is an indicator. Reitsma pitched in 338 games, making 53 starts, with 32 wins and 37 saves.

The updated list of Canadians receiving six-figure signing bonuses as far back as we can go
Listings of the players who received the same amount are listed by the earliest in the case of a tie. We used to rank by rounds in a case of a tie.
Our accounting department figured since this is a money list the $100,000 the Pirates gave RHP Tom Boleska (Burlington Ont.) of High Point in 2007, was worth more than the $100,000 handed out by the Marlins to both Purdue C Connor Caskenette (Duncan, BC) and Oregon State OF Micah McDowell (Coldbrook, N.S.) in 2024.
