The Junior National Team combined timely hitting with dominant pitching to earn a 3-0 win over the New York Mets DSL squad on Tuesday.
The Canadians scored two runs in the first inning via a Robert Omidi (Mississauga, Ont.) two-run double to take an early lead.
On the mound, Shane Brinham (North Vancouver, BC) started and limited the Mets to two hits, while striking out five, in three innings of work.
Philip Cheong (Richmond Hill, Ont.) showed impressive power from the leadoff spot, belting a solo home run to extend the lead to 3-0 in the third.
That would be all the offence the Juniors would need, as right-hander Will Hynes (Mississauga, Ont.) took over from Brinham and fanned four batters while tossing three scoreless innings.
Nick Halcovitch (Waterdown, Ont.) then pitched the final three innings and allowed just one hit, while striking out four.
The Juniors were also outstanding in the field. Key plays early on from outfielder Easton Kitura (Spruce Grove, Alta.) and infielders Justin Rompré (Sainte-Anne-De-La-Perade, Que.) and Elliot Lascelles (Toronto, Ont.) helped secure the shutout.
With the win, the Junior National Team improves to 5-3 with one game left in the Dominican Pro Academy camp.
