OTTAWA – PEI’s Eastern Expressed built a four-run lead early in the game and then held off Nova Scotia’s Yarmouth charge for a 5-4 victory in the gold medal game at the 13U Atlantic Championship.
Everything seemed to be going PEI’s way when they added a valuable additional run in the bottom half of the sixth to give them a 5-1 lead at the time. However, down to their last three outs, Yarmouth started a bid for a comeback scoring three runs in the top of the seventh to make it a one run game.
Eastern Express would ultimately hold the lead and induce a fly ball to the catcher to end the game and secure the number one spot in the tournament.
A Dyson Ogden two-RBI base hit capped the big seventh inning for Nova Scotia.
Brennan Doyle was the starter on the mound for Prince Edward Island, cruising through six innings of the game, permitting only three hits while striking out five.
Max Keough produced a huge offensive day for the team as well with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the dish. Gavin Thomson also had a good day at the plate, collecting a pair of RBIs on two hits over his three at bats.
With the loss, Nova Scotia’s Yarmouth squad drops to second place capturing the Silver at the 13U Atlantic Championship.
In the bronze medal game, Nova Scotia’s Hants North defeated the Prince Edward Island Summerside Chevys by a score of 5-4.
Hants North scored five runs on 11 hits to slug themselves into the third spot of the 13U Atlantic Championship.
Logan Kiever, Evan Penny and Drew Kogon slugged their team to victory, all producing multi-hit games for their squad.
