BMOC Week 7

Canadian Baseball Network 

A no-hitter highlights a lengthy list of strong performances from Canadians across college baseball this past week. 

Let’s check out who fared the best. 

UBC sweeps College of Idaho  

The University of British Columbia broke out the brooms and swept the College of Idaho in a four-game series. 

The bats certainly came to play as the Thunderbirds scored 51 runs. 

Let’s take a look at who produced, in alphabetical order. 

David Draayers (Abbotsford, BC) had seven hits, a walk, six RBIs and was hit by a pitch. 

David Krahn (Langley, BC) went 5-for-7 in a 19-6 Game 1 win and closed the series with eight hits in all. He also walked twice and was hit by a pitch. 

Trent Lenihan (White Rock, BC) started his week by going 4-for-6 with three RBIs and a stolen base in the opener. Over the last three games, he had four hits, including a two-run home run in Game 4, a walk and five RBIs. 

Aaron Marsh (Nanaimo, BC) had a pair of three-hit games, walked twice, drove in six and stole a base. 

Jonny McGill (Richmond, BC) collected 10 hits, seven RBIs and a stolen base. He hit two-run home runs in games 3 and 4. 

Mitchell Middlemiss (Chilliwack, BC) had seven hits, one of which was a two-run home run, two walks and five RBIs. He was hit by a pitch in Game 1. 

Aidan Rose (Calgary, Alta.) chipped in four hits and a walk. 

Kyle Yip (Calgary, Alta.) swatted a solo home run as part of a five-hit series. He drove in four and was hit by a pitch. 

Russell Young (Surrey, BC) amassed five hits, walked once and drove in three. 

On the bump, Ryan Heppner (Point Roberts, Wash.), formerly of the Delta Blue Jays, picked up the win in Game 3 with six innings of work. He surrendered one run on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts. 

Boscarino, Crowell combine for four home runs 

Power supplied by two Canadians helped Reinhardt University pick up three of four wins. 

Luca Boscarino (Mississauga, Ont.) hit a two-run home run and a solo shot as part of a three-hit, four RBI week. He also walked once. 

Nash Crowell (Yarmouth, N.S.) swatted a solo home run in a Game 1 win over Milligan before breaking a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning of Game 2 with a two-run shot en route to a 6-4 victory. In the four games, he had the two hits, walked six times and drove in three. 

Hicks, Villalobos can’t be slowed 

Connor Hicks (Toronto, Ont.) and Alfonso Villalobos (Kirkland, Que.) had huge weeks for NAIA No. 3 Southeastern University. 

Hicks collected 11 hits, walked five times, drove in 11, stole a base and was hit by two pitches as the Fire went 5-1. Two of his hits were home runs, a two-run shot in a win over Dordt and another two-run blast during a 9-3 victory over No. 21 Concordia (Neb.). 

Villalobos went deep three times on the way to finishing with nine hits, four walks, 13 RBIs and a hit by pitch. The former Académie de Baseball du Canada grad got started early with a 4-for-5 game with a two-run home run, a three-run home run and six RBIs in a 27-6 victory over Dordt to begin the week. He then hit a three-run shot and drove in six in a Game 1 win over Concordia. 

The Fire are now 21-1 on the season. 

McKinnon wins in relief 

Right-hander Cole McKinnon (Calgary, Alta.) was summoned from the bullpen and threw 5 1/3 innings to earn the win in Big Bend College’s 6-4 victory over Walla Walla. McKinnon allowed one run on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

Patrick produces seven hits 

It was a good week for Cole Patrick (Markham, Ont.) and the Florida Tech Panthers as he had seven hits and his team finished 4-0. Patrick also drove in three and was hit by three pitches. One of his hits was a solo home run in a 5-4 win over Palm Beach Atlantic in Game 1 of their series. 

Gomm goes off for Pilots 

After lacing a double to help No. 1 LSU Shreveport to a 7-2 Game 2 win over Xavier, Austin Gomm (Georgetown, Ont.) went 4-for-4 with a two-run home run, a walk and three RBIs as the Pilots completed the sweep with a 15-4 victory. 

McGuin, Dodge City have busy week 

Six games were on the schedule for Dodge City and that was just fine for Josh McGuin (Toronto, Ont.) as he played in all of them and pounded out eight hits, including a pair of home runs in a 17-0 victory over Lake Region State. On top of the hits, he also walked three times, drove in nine and was hit by a pitch. 

Griffin has four-hit game 

Leo Griffin (Boucherville, Que.) went 4-for-4 with three doubles, a walk and three RBIs as No. 21 Hutchinson downed Dodge City, 23-11. On the week, he had a total of seven knocks, three walks, six RBIs and a stolen base.

MacIntosh helps Cloud County sweep 

Jack MacIntosh (Penticton, BC) was excellent on the mound for Cloud County in Game 2 of their series against Pratt. He spun six scoreless innings, allowing two hits and working around four walks to aid the Thunderbirds in a 12-0 win. The right-hander fanned six to improve to 2-1 while the T-Birds would go on to sweep the four-game set. 

Tomkinson has four hits 

Union College received four hits from Cooper Tomkinson (Barrie, Ont.). He went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and five RBIs as the Bulldogs beat Alice Lloyd 17-1. 

Cuthbertson goes six strong 

Hayden Cuthbertson (Delta, BC) delivered six scoreless innings for Miami University as they defeated Toledo 5-0 to open their three-game series. Cuthbertson gave up three hits, walked one and struck out six.

Miller’s strong effort not enough 

Despite seven innings of work by Jay Miller (Corner Brook, Nfld.), the University of North Carolina Greensboro dropped Game 2 of their series with Radford 4-3 in 13 innings. Miller surrendered one run on five hits and struck out four. 

Hammering Hoy 

Hudson Hoy (Spruce Grove, Alta.) had a weekend for Northeastern Junior College, pounding out eight hits, walking twice, driving in eight and stealing a base. He hit three home runs in the Plainsmen’s sweep. 

Wickett with two-homer game 

Infielder Alex Wickett (Tiny, Ont.) swatted a pair of home runs as Marshalltown defeated Central College 17-2. In four games during the week, he had seven hits, a walk, six RBIs and a stolen base. 

McHarg mashes three home runs 

Payton McHarg (Saskatoon, Sask.) hammered two solo shots and a two-run home run in three games for Washburn. Two of those homers, a solo and the two-run, came in the Ichabods 13-5 victory over William Jewell. He finished the three games with six hits, six walks, five RBIs and a stolen base.

Manias has eight RBI game, hits grand slam 

Aaron Manias (Uxbridge, Ont.) went 4-for-5 with a three-run home run, three doubles and eight RBIs as Purdue beat Indiana State 14-4 in a midweek clash. After a hit and an RBI in Game 1 of their series with Minnesota, he launched a grand slam to help his team to an 11-6 Game 2 win. He finished the series with a hit in a Game 3 loss. 

Canadians lead Valley City State 

A seven-game week for Valley City State meant plenty of opportunities for three Canadians. 

Takao Cookson (Regina, Sask.) picked up the win in an 8-1 victory over Cornerstone by throwing five innings and allowing one run on one hit. He walked one and struck out six. 

Jaden Babiuk (St. Albert, Alta.) had 13 hits, walked once, drove in four and stole two bases. 

Kaden Rozdeba (Strathclaire, Man.) collected 11 hits, walked three times, drove in 10 and was hit by a pitch. He hit a solo homer in a 4-1 victory over Cornerstone. 

White aids West Virginia offence 

The Mountaineers of West Virginia used 10 hits, two walks, 10 RBIs and two stolen bases from Sam White (Aurora, Ont.) to go 3-1 on the week and improve to 14-1 overall. 

Boudreau, Villeneuve shine for Red Raiders 

Two Canadians stood out for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. 

Right-hander Ty Boudreau (Sylvan Lake, Alta.) picked up the win in a midweek game over UC San Diego thanks to six scoreless innings. He allowed two hits, a walk and fanned nine. 

Offensively, Robin Villeneuve (Gatineau, Que.) laced nine hits, walked three times, drove in four and was hit by a pitch. He hit a solo home run and a three-run shot in back-to-back midweek wins over UC San Diego.

Maude shows off power 

Catcher Lachlan Maude (Etobicoke, Ont.) hit three home runs and had five hits in all as New Mexico Junior College swept New Mexico Military Institute in a four-game series. He also walked three times and drove in six. Two of the home runs came in a 16-9 Game 2 win. 

Germann back in the BMOC 

Davis Germann (Kitchener, Ont.) keeps producing for Morehead State. This past week he had seven hits, three walks, six RBIs, two stolen bases and was hit by a pitch. He went 3-for-5 with a solo and three-run homer, a walk and five RBIs during a 16-11 loss to South Carolina in Game 2 of their series. 

Vanneste pounds Cal Poly Pomona 

A 3-1 series win over Cal Poly Pomona saw Tyler Vanneste (Warman, Sask.) contribute eight hits, a walk and eight RBIs for Cal State San Bernardino. Vanneste went 4-for-5 with a three-run home run and six RBIs in Game 2. 

Gillespie throws no-no 

Blake Gillespie (Lucan, Ont.) tossed the second no-hitter in the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s history in their 5-0 Game 1 win over James Madison. Gillespie walked one and struck out 11 to earn his first win of the season.
