While there were a number of noteworthy performances by Canadians in college baseball this past week, Blake Gillespie (Lucan, Ont.) had the best one.
Gillespie got the ball for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in Game 1 of their three-game series against James Madison and set the tone for the weekend by throwing a nine-inning no-hitter in a 5-0 victory.
He issued just one walk and struck out 11 to also pick up his first win of the season, improving to 1-2.
It was the second no-hitter in program history.
His effort landed him the American Athletic Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week honour.
Gillespie, a transfer from the University of Georgia and Ontario Nationals grad, owns a 3.80 ERA with 27 strikeouts over 23 2/3 innings in four starts.
Blake Gillespie is the Canadian Baseball Network College Player of the Week for March 3 to 9.
