Toronto Mets alum Liam Hicks has made the Miami Marlins’ Opening Day roster.
The 25-year-old Toronto native was informed of the club’s decision yesterday. You can watch Hicks receive the news here:
Hicks will serve as the Marlins' backup catcher to start the season.
The Marlins selected Hicks in the Rule 5 draft from the Detroit Tigers in December, which meant that Hicks had to be on the Marlins’ Opening Day roster or be offered back to the Tigers.
Hicks has impressed both offensively (.417 on-base percentage (OBP) in 13 games) and defensively this spring for the Marlins. He caught Marlins' ace Sandy Alcantara's first two starts this spring.
Hicks was chosen in the ninth round of the 2021 MLB draft by the Texas Rangers. He has since played parts of four minor league seasons. He split 2024 between double-A in the Rangers’ and Tigers’ organizations and batted .264 with a .379 OBP with six home runs in 113 games.
The Toronto Mets alum is the son of proud parents, Bill and Jen Hicks.
His brother, Connor, who’s also a catcher who honed his skills with the Toronto Mets, is in his senior season at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Fla.
